Frequently Asked Questions

Series 4000 Overheat Indicators
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is a Pump Overheat Indicator?

A. The Pump Overheat Indicator monitors the heat generated from the pump. It is
activated when the sensor located on the pump reaches a temperature of 125
degrees Fahrenheit (+ or - 5 degrees varience) and turns off when the temperature
drops below 125 degrees Fahrenheit (+ or - 5 degrees varience). The Pump Overheat
Indicator has two (2) flashing lights that inform the operator there may be a problem.

Q. I know my pump is overheating, but the Pump Overheat Indicator light is not on.

A. Check the lights for proper operation by depressing the test switch. If the lights
illuminate, check the wires to see if they are broken or frayed. Apply heat (at least
125 degrees F) to the sensor or run the pump at 250-300 psi with the outlet valve
closed for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. After a few minutes the sensor will
activate and the lights will illuminate.

Q. What does the "Push-To-Test" switch do?

A. The switch on the Pump Overheat Indicator is a test switch used to indicate if the
lights (and alarm, if used) are functioning properly. When pressed, the Pump
Overheat Indicator bypasses the sensor and applies 12 VDC to the lights. (NOTE:
The lights will flash for as long as the switch is depressed.) This test lets the
operator know the unit has 12 VDC and ground applied and that the lights are in
working order.

Q. I pressed the test switch but nothing happens. What is the problem?

A. Check the bulb for proper operation. Check the wiring as follows:

Red Wire Connected to 12 VDC
Black Wire Connected to chassis ground
Dual Contuctor Black Wire Attached to the sensor
Brown Wire Connected to the alarm (if applicable)

If the wires are attached properly, there may be a problem with the switch. Press the
switch several times. If the switch comes on intermittantly or not at all, contact MC
Products at 1-800-843-6465 for further instructions.

Q. The Pump Overheat Indicator comes supplied with a brown alarm wire. It is not
necessary for my application. What should I do with this wire?

A. The wire comes attached to a blue barrel connector. It may be left on or capped off.
NOTE: it is important not to attach this wire to 12 VDC power or chassis ground.

Q. My Pump Overheat Indicator is in a location where it is getting wet. How can I
protect it?

A. We recommend that the unit be sealed to prevent erratic readings. To do this, first
ensure that the unit is clean and dry inside. Apply a bead of silicone around the
seams to seal it.

Q. How do I mount the sensor?

A. Select a flat area on the pump housing that will not be affected by external heat
sources ie. exhaust pipes. With denatured alcohol, clean the area of all dirt, oil, etc.
Apply the mixed epoxy to the sensor bracket and place the bracket to the housing.
Hold the bracket in place for about 5 minutes.
